99 Word Essay - "Wishing Star"

I am trying to fulfill one of my goals by starting back with a flash fiction group.   This is a once a week effort and this week we are to use the words, "Wishing Star".  This flash fiction group is called "Carrot Ranch Literary Community"

I hope you enjoy my brief effort.  I plan to try this every week.

***** Start of Flash Fiction *****

I am sitting outside in the backyard, smoking my pipe when I look into the night sky and see a “falling star.”

“A wishing star.” I mutter to myself quietly.

I take the pipe out of my mouth, and with my palm of my other hand, I rub across my face and smooth out the edges of my beard and mustache.  A tear forms and brims out of my eye.

“Life did not used to be so complex.” I think to myself.  “How have things gotten so stressful and anxiety filled?”

I knock out the ashes and go inside.

***** End of Flash Fiction *****

  1. Welcome to the Ranch! I look forward to your contributions as we begin a new year. What a poignant twist, and I think this resonates with many. A good pipe is a way to ponder, and watch the stars.

  2. Good job Pipe. You captured the moment wonderfully. Can you do the same in say 50 words?

  3. I was sure I left a comment here. Regardless, good job Pipe. I don't think Life is more complex. I just think we let it seem that way.

I appreciate all forms of comments on my writings. I find that I miss the sponteneity of coming to read them here when they were unmoderated. I believe I wrote less due to the moderation. I have decided to adopt limited moderation. Hopefully the prior problems with unfettered comments will not arise again. Please feel free to comment as you wish about the essays I write. I will maintain those comments that offer kind-hearted and gentle opinion... be it positive or negative. The opinions of your comments will, of course, need to have relevance to the post as well.
