Today's First Reading

A man came from Baal-shalishah bringing to Elisha, the man of God,
twenty barley loaves made from the firstfruits,
and fresh grain in the ear.
Elisha said, "Give it to the people to eat."
But his servant objected,
"How can I set this before a hundred people?"
Elisha insisted, "Give it to the people to eat."
"For thus says the LORD,
'They shall eat and there shall be some left over.'"
And when they had eaten, there was some left over,
as the LORD had said.

2 Kgs 4:42-44

This reading keeps telling me I should not be such a worrier.  Why is it that I worry so much?  Why?  It is not helping me to be happier.  It is frustrating.

I suppose you worry because stories like that are bullshit. And maybe you worry because you'll have to get a house with just one bathroom.

If you are SERIOUS about wanting to stop obsessing about stuff that either hasn't happened (and probably won't) or that has happened (and you can't change the past!), then hie thee to your local mental health office and get some meds to help you cope and some counseling to figure out WHY you can't focus on what is so good in your life! You are wasting your life living in the past and the what-ifs! And surely you understand by now that you cannot do this on your own, as many times as I've seen you try.

He'd do better at it if he got away from all that religious brainwashing. After all, he is well educated, you would think he would know better.

I was not thinking of religion when I said he cannot do this by himself, but of counselors and psychiatrists and support groups. Religion has its place in that too, however, for some, and depending on what flavor it is. I like the Higher Power aspecft more than the vengeful, guilt-inflicting God one.

The only higher power on this rock is nature and I wouldn't expect her to care about us as destructive as we are.

I disagree. You can find a Higher Power within a group, in your own psyche, in nature, or wherever. That it can be also destructive is debatable, but if it is, perhaps it is nothing more than Ego shouting louder than power.

I can also find a higher power in the huge backhoe or a gun.

Such wonderful comments! :)
Why, indeed?
