Monday

Lets see... a brief summary of the weekend:  On Friday, I decided to visit my elderly father-in-law in the afternoon.  Libations and pipes were abundant (reflected in my rather poor showing for Friday, below).  It was a very nice afternoon.  Saturday, we drove around a bit, looking at things, and taking care of things around the house.  Sunday, we went to an Indian buffet which was delicious, and also took care of things around the house.  After the very hectic last few weeks, it was nice to have a mostly stay-at-home weekend. We had a lot of fun as a couple and as a family.

We had a missionary priest at Mass this weekend, and he talked about his work in Tanzania.  I wish I had enough gumption to do something more meaningful.  Other than being there for my family, I do not feel I do much of merit in life.  I wish I did.  Interestingly, Tanzania is the African nation where Mount Kilimanjaro is located, which was the subject of one of my favorite short stories/novels by Ernest Hemingway, "The Snows of Kilimanjaro".

Here on my 5:00am walk this morning it was in the 60's and pouring rain all the while I was walking.  But, by this evening, we may have snow.  So, it should be a pretty hectic day outside today, probably a helluva lot of wind during the transition.

Well, I need to get ready for classes, and take care of some of my research animals  before I lecture most of the day.   BBC & Teri, the trip sounds wonderful.  I would greatly enjoy being out in that region for a while.  As you can see below, my pipe tobacco consumption was very much not in keeping with my goals for the hobby this weekend.  I am hoping to do better today.

That trip may be my last grand adventure, I'm not getting any younger and meeting interesting blog friends will be way cool. Some fireside discussions can be about brains and spirit.

I've done a lot of volunteer work in the past, for what it was worth to the universe. Now I just help Helen stay in her home, but I think that's enough for my part.

Tomorrow I'm posting a reply from Laurel Ann about her experience of stopping smoking.

I'm not keeping track of how many bowls I smoke, seems like a waste of time.

One thing that works for me if I really work at it is to fight it in 15 minute lots. When I get to the 15 minute mark I say, "Can't have a puff for another 15 minutes."

Well, I still help others at times but it's hit and miss. I do lots of things I could get paid for, like many of the things I've done for Terry, but what the hell, money doesn't mean a lot to me.

Now if I could just remember to buy some goddamn lotto tickets maybe I could win a big pot for some remote property.

Correction, the last blog buddy I met was when I went to Oregon to meet Rebecca, but she's so damn goofy that we didn't connect. Interesting trip though.

I'd tell you to buy a pot pipe cuz they have smaller bowls but my experience is that they are a pain to keep clean and the screens plug up too soon. And most of them don't have a filter in them.

Would a nicotine patch work? Pardon my ignorance, but I don't know if tobacco pipe smokers inhale or not. Maybe it's all about the ritual, smell, tactile sense? Could a hookah be any better?

Nicotine patches didn't work for me but that isn't to say they won't for others.

The one advantage to smoking a pipe is that it's a lot cheaper than smoking cigarets. Teri would be cool if she had a little pot pipe, she seems eccentric enough that she would get a kick out of the reactions of others. I lit mine up right in front of cops and smiled at them.

Time to go over to Rick's for beers and bullshit.

I'm back, as a man that's gained a little wisdom I feel that I can confidently tell you that while Pipe and Teri seem calm, cool and collected on the outside if you happen to be around them they are really intense on the inside.

It's really hard for intense people to stop smoking.

They are basically A personalities maintaining type B personalities on the outside. I'm cool with that.

I just reread your post, I suggest that you stop looking at pipe smoking as a hobby, unless you intend on doing it without inhaling. And I damn sure don't see any point in that.

If you want a harmless hobby collect bees in a jar, they'll die but who gives a fuck, it's just a fucking hobby. :-)

Pipe sure is quite in his own comment section.

Hey Pipe, have you had a puff yet today?

Here's something to ponder on, HARRY, comments on Billy P's blog at times, was a smoker.

Okay, he smoked a lot of shit he shouldn't have been smoking that had been sprayed with nasty stuff but maybe that's beside the point.

The point now is that he's about 56 and pretty much killed his lungs, struggles from one day to the next on oxygen trying to hang on to life.

When I first met him a few years ago he could do a little and kicked around with me some, but not so much now, when I go see him now we mostly just sit and talk.

It's all a crap shoot but abusing our lungs isn't the brightest thing for us to be doing.

I'll try it again, just went and got some patches, going to try a different kind of brain science approach that Teri will appreciate if it works.
