Still...

Still carrying my pipe with me today.  It was oddly comforting in some ways but meloncholic in others.   Some of the seemingly ingrained patterns I miss came to me very naturally.  Although, of course it was not the “complete” experience by any stretch of the imagination.  It felt comfortable and friendly when I would touch it in my pocket or hold it in my hand.  Gripping the stem between my teeth also felt friendly and calming.

Not sure if this is a good long range strategy, or is a bit of a “slippery slope”.... but I will try it again today.

Of course it is a slippery slope! But that's not necessarily a bad thing, depending on how you handle it. If you had your druthers, you would be smoking your pipe. There's nothing wrong with that. Instead, as part of your overall effort to please the people around you, you are sacrificing your own pleasure. There's nothing wrong with that; indeed it is a noble effort. What's most sad is that some abusive people can never be pleased, but will take advantage of your eager-to-please nature. If you don't make some provisions for your own comfort and peace of mind, you'll forever be a victim of such people. Now, taking up the pipe again doesn't have to be one of those provisions, but I think you know that you'll have to deal with crabby and selfish people whether or not you are smoking your pipes. I get the sense that carrying a pipe around reminds you of the person you want and hope to be, whether or not that has anything to do with actually smoking the pipe.
