20 Hours

Well, my first foray into modifying my pipe smoking lasted 20 hours. Although not the length of time I had envisioned (I had envisioned 56 hours for the first step in refraining), I did learn quite a bit. I am going to take the knowledge learned and try to improve on my efforts.

What I *would like* to have as a perfect end goal for me would be for me to be able to retrain myself to not smoke my pipes most of the time, and to be able to indulge on an occasional basis. For me, I would most like to get to a point where I smoke a pipe 2-3 times a week. In my manner of thinking, if I can figure out how to do that successfully, I will have found nirvana.

Yet, it is difficult to teach an old dog new tricks, as the saying goes. I have smoked a pipe pretty much as much as I wanted to ever since I was a young kid. There were natural fluctuations that occurred, where I smoked very lightly at times and there were long stretches where I smoked quite heavily as well. In my manner currently, I am in a long stretch of what I would call "moderate" pipe smoking... probably on average I smoke 4-6 pipes a day. That is my current, natural rate.

What I have found out about myself in this first of what appear will be a series of efforts to retrain myself to a new "norm" of 2-3 pipes a week is quite interesting. I will work on putting together my thoughts about this for tomorrow.

good luck.

I might point out that sometimes it is better to go cold turkey, wait a month for the worse of the old habits to die, then rebuild.

But it isn't my agony. Just wish the best for you.

Based on my own experiences I dare say that you should either smoke at the rate that you need to smoke at, or just give it up completely because trying to moderate is asking for failure.

Unless you are strong enough to say something like, "I'm only going to enjoy a bowl after meals."

I sure can't do that. I'm currently smoking about six ounces a month and I see no end to that unless I can flat out quit, something I should likely do.

On the other hand, I've outlived a hell of a lot of people that told me I should quit smoking, including doctors.

I had to give up women because they are so fucked up here, but on the plus side, smoking is a hell of a lot cheaper and a pipe doesn't talk back to me and pitch shit on me.

my sister is doing Heroine. she has tried to use in moderation. the drug wins out everytime.
it's all or nothing when it comes to addiction.
most addicts think they can be the exception to the rule.
i commend you for trying.
it's the first step towards quitting, being honest with yourself, or both.

Good sir, thanks for your comment.

Sadly, no matter how much I drink, alcoholic or otherwise, I find not relief from the clutches of the dreaded lurgy.

Methinks that time and patience is this remedy for this one.

Mr Chikwepa, I appreciate your sentiments and will presume myself fihting fit within the week...

Best regards

Anonymous, you are a fucking coward for posting as anonymous. Yes, the world will be a better place when I leave it, just as it will be a better place when you leave it.

But it won't be any quieter, my noise will keep going on, or haven't you ever noticed that?
