I did the same thing as a kid, thought I started out of boredom. It's a skill that can be somewhat useful. So as for your question- does position and orientation have a big role? Not really. It was a fun surprise.

I read upside down very easily. I wouldn't want to do it all the time and I don't know if it's a common thing. I think it makes the brain work a little harder...
